GDC Plastic Filling Instrument

Plastic filling instruments, also known as placement instruments, are designed for placing and contouring pliable restorative materials into cavity preparations and other dental procedures. These instruments generally have rounded ends that help in applying restoratives without damaging sensitive tissue.

  • One working end is flat for carrying and placing filling material & another working end is condensor for carrying & condensing the restorative material

  • Material Selection: Use the PFI3 for handling and shaping composite resins, glass ionomers, or temporary filling materials.
  • Handling: Hold the instrument with a firm yet comfortable grip using a pen or modified pen grasp for precise control.
  • Material Placement: Pick up a small amount of composite or filling material and place it onto the prepared cavity in layers to avoid air entrapment.
  • Shaping & Contouring: Use the flat, smooth working end to spread, shape, and contour the filling material according to the natural tooth anatomy.
  • Condensation: Gently press the material into the cavity to ensure proper adaptation and eliminate voids. Avoid excessive force to prevent material displacement.
  • Smoothing & Finishing: Use the instrument to refine the surface, ensuring smooth transitions and proper marginal adaptation before light curing.
  • Curing Consideration: When working with light-cured composites, minimize instrument pressure to prevent dislodging the material before polymerization.
  • Cleaning After Use: Immediately clean the instrument with an appropriate cleaning solution or ultrasonic cleaner to remove residual material before sterilization
